MUMBAI: Tuesday remained a wet day for Mumbai with several areas in the city reporting significant rain activity.
In the nine hours ending 5.30pm, the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Colaba observatory reported 83.6mm rains, which falls in the heavy rain category as per the weather bureau's classification, while IMD Santacruz observatory recorded only 7.7mm rains which falls in the light rain category.
A yellow alert has already been issued by IMD for July 27-28 forecasting heavy rains at isolated places. A weather official said that they expect the wet spell to remain through the week however the intensity of rainfall is likely to increase further from August 1 onward.
"The satellite and radar images are indicating cloudy weather over Maharashtra coast. This cloudiness has ensured that it remains a rainy day for Mumbai and its adjoining areas. The south westerly winds are also pushing in moisture. We are expecting further intensity of rains to increase from August 1 onward," said KS Hosalikar, deputy director-general (western region), IMD.
Meanwhile, the intense rains in the island city not only led to traffic snarls but BEST buses too had to be diverted in some areas due to waterlogging.
