Many parts of Mumbai reported rains on Monday morning.(TOI photo)MUMBAI: Parts of Mumbai and its adjoining areas were seen reporting heavy overnight rains between July 26-27 with the wet spell continuing in the morning hours of Monday as well.
However all through the day there were only on and off moderate rains reported in several pockets of the city. The weather bureau has forecast that light to moderate rains are likely to continue in Mumbai and its surrounding areas all through the coming week as well.
The heavy overnight rains caused waterlogging in a few low lying areas of the city as well namely Hindmata in Dadar and Andheri subway. Owing to this traffic was also diverted at these few locations.
The rainfall recorded in the 24 hours ending 8.30am on Monday by the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Santacruz observatory was 100.7 mm which falls in the heavy rain category (64.5mm --115.5mm) according to the weather bureau's classification while rain reported for the same period by the Colaba observatory was 60.4 mm which falls in the moderate rain category (15.6 mm -64.4 mm). Meanwhile all through Monday on and off rain showers were seen continuing and in the nine hours ending 5.30 pm on Monday moderate rains were reported by the IMD Colaba observatory of 50.8 mm and IMD Santacruz observatory of 16 mm.
Mahesh Palawat, vice president meteorology and climate change from private weather forecasting agency Skymet said that it was localised weather systems that gave the city these heavy showers. "There was a development of thunder clouds owing to which this 100 mm overnight shower was reported. But we are expecting a gradual increase in rain activity between August 1-4 owing to the development of a trough over Maharashtra coast. Till then sporadic rain showers will continue in the city but it may not be very widespread," he said.
