Covid-19: 927 test positive in Kerala on Sunday, 760 of them contact cases

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The total number of Covid-19 cases reported in the state is nearing 20,000, with 5,031 cases reported in the last five days. The state has so far reported 19,025 cases, 499 cases from January 30 to May 4 when Keralites from abroad and other states started coming back and 18,526 cases after that. Of the total cases, 10,138 are contact cases and 8,887 imported cases.
On Sunday, the state reported 927 cases. These include 760 contact cases and 67 cases in which the source of infection is not known. The number of active cases is 9,655 while 689 patients tested negative for the virus.
Two Covid deaths — Varghese (71) of Thrissur and Abdul Khader (71) of Malappuram — were reported on the day, taking the total number of deaths in the state to 62, including the Mahe native who died in Kannur in April. As many as 77 persons who tested positive on the day came from abroad and 91 from other states.
16 healthcare workers, 4 BSF personnel infected
Thiruvananthapuram (175 cases, of which 164 infected through contact) led the tally on Sunday also, followed by Kasaragod (107; 105), Pathanamthitta (91; 53), Kollam (74; 59), Ernakulam (61; 57), Kozhikode (57; 48), Malappuram (56; 39), Kottayam (54; 45), Idukki (48; 31), Kannur (47; 31), Alappuzha (46; 35), Palakkad (42; 37), Thrissur (41; 15) and Wayanad (28;14).
As many as 16 healthcare workers -- eight in Thiruvananthapuram, three in Ernakulam, two in Alappuzha and one each in Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Kannur --were also infected. Four BSF personnel, four Kerala Solvents Extraction Ltd employees, one KLF employee in Thrissur, an ITBP personnel in Alappuzha and a Defence Security Corps personnel in Kannur were also infected. Thiruvananthapuram has 2,788 active cases, followed by Ernakulam 863, Kollam 856 and Alappuzha 781. The number of recoveries so far is 9,302.
As many as 1,56,162 people are under observation in the state, of whom 1,47,182 are under home/institutional quarantine and 8,980 admitted to hospitals. On Sunday alone, 1,277 persons were hospitalised.
During the last 24 hours, 20,626 samples were tested. Till now, a total of 6,72,748 samples have been sent for tests, of which results of 7,492 samples are pending. A total of 1,09,143 samples collected as part of sentinel surveillance tested negative. As many as 29 new places were designated as hotspots on Sunday, taking the total number of hotspots in the state to 494.
