PUNE: The Muslim community in the city has responded positively to the
state home department’s suggestion urging people to use
online facilities to buy goats for Bakri Eid.
The community has set up
dedicated telephone numbers, WhatsApp video chats as well as video calling facilities to enable people to view goats they can purchase. Most deals are being executed ensuring minimal physical contact and online cash transfers are being encouraged.
The number of
online transactions increased after Ulemas (Islamic scholars) appealed to the community to observe social distance while buying goats. Maulana Abdul Rahaman, secretary of the Sunni Ulema Council, Pune, said, “It has become convenient to buy and sell ‘billy’s’. Since the government has banned goat markets, people are using online modes of transactions. People involved in online sales are delivering animals at the door step. The community is being made aware that it is crucial to pray at home and sacrifice animals while maintaining social distance.”
Haji Zakir Shaikh, president of All India Quami Tanzeem, western Maharashtra, added, “Online facilities have picked up traction but it is not in accordance with Islamic customs and traditions because most people buy goats after looking at them and ensuring that they are healthy and safe to be slaughtered.”
Rafiuddin Shaikh, secretary of the Seerat Committee, Pune, said, “Eid-ul-Zuha or Bakri Eid will be celebrated on August 1. Apart from using online modes, a large number of people have booked goats six months in advance. Businessman selling livestock are contacting customers and striking deals with them to sell goats at the best possible rate. People are also visiting villages in the district to purchase goats directly from farmers and poultry farms.”
Businessman Ikram Khan shared that there is shortage of goats because the supply of animals transported from places like Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh has stopped due to Covid-19.
Community leader Akbar Pathan added, “Madrasa’s (educational institutions) have also launched online facilities to cater to the demands of Muslims for buying and selling goats.”
