The Supreme Court today allowed the Rajasthan Assembly Speaker to withdraw his appeal against the high court's order asking him to defer till July 24 the disqualification proceedings against sacked deputy chief minister Sachin Pilot and 18 dissident Congress MLAs. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Speaker CP Joshi, told a bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra that the Rajasthan High Court had passed a fresh order on July 24 and they were weighing the legal options. While withdrawing the plea, Kapil Sibal told the bench that the appeal had become infructuous as the top court did not stay the earlier high court order passed on July 21 asking the Speaker to defer disqualification proceedings.

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot - struggling to keep his government afloat -- has sent a second proposal to Governor Kalraj Mishra for starting the assembly session. The proposed date is July 31 and the agenda cited is coronavirus. There is no word on floor test. Mr Gehlot maintains that some MLAs supporting him are being held hostage at the rebel camp in Gurugram and once they come to Jaipur, his numbers will rise further. The Governor, who turned down the earlier proposal pointing out that it did not mention a date or a reason for the assembly session, said he is examining it.

The Congress is divided over pursuing the Rajasthan case legally in the Supreme Court, sources told NDTV a day before the court is expected to hear the matter. A section wants the Congress to pull its petition out of court and handle the matter politically. These leaders, sources said, feel the crisis should be dealt with politically. Others are keen to keep up the engagement in court. The final decision has been left to the party high command, sources said.
