MUMBAI: Sub-inspector
Jitendra Kadam from the
Marine Drive police station, who on May 9 was stabbed by a 27-year-old Breach Candy resident, an architect, has tested Covid-19 positive and is undergoing treatment at the
Bombay Hospital.
At the Marine Drive police station 31 cops, who diagnosed positive in the one month, are undergoing treatment at various places. The high number of positive cases among cops at this police station stands second in south Mumbai after the
JJ Marg police station where 46 cops were found to be positive two months ago.
On May 9 at around 1.30am while Kadam along with two other cops was on nakabandi duty, he spotted Nayar walking with a chopper near the Pransukhlal Mafatlal Hindu Swimming Bath and Boat Club. The policemen tried to stop him but he started running. When chased, he attacked the cops with the chopper. He was overpowered and arrested for attempt to murder.
A senior officer said that the number of Covid positive cops rose after the increased Nakabandis and the public was allowed on the Marine Drive promenade. Last month, on June 22, an assistant sub-inspector, Suryakant Jadhav (55), from this police station, died of Covid-19. He was the 50th policeman in Maharashtra to have died due to Covid-19. Jadhav, who had no previous ailment, was undergoing treatment for coronavirus at Bandra’s
Guru Nanak Hospital.
Among those tested positive during the last month include three inspectors, four sub-inspectors and 22 police constables. “The cops at the police station are being counselled and motivated. All of them are on the road to recovery,” said Sangramsinh Nishandar, zonal DCP.
An officer said that since the Marine Drive promenade was opened for the public, there was a spike in positive cases among the cops. "They are deployed for the bandoast there every day. At 7 pm, the cops begin whistling, a signal for the public to go home. Besides this, there are heavy nakabandis at the Marine Drive-stretch every day," added an officer.
