BOSTON --- The Mets arrived at their team hotel early Monday morning after boarding a bus at their Citi Field home.

New York eschewed a trip to the airport and a charter flight following Sunday night’s home loss to Atlanta in the name of a more controlled environment. The Mets had COVID-19 prevention at the forefront of their organizational thinking.

Pete Alonso was among those who walked to the ballpark early Monday afternoon. The reigning National League Rookie of the Year arrived ahead of most of his teammates, who filed down Jersey Street in three different buses just before 4 p.m.

New York sent starter Michael Wacha to the mound, the former rookie phenom with the Cardinals who pitched twice against the Red Sox in the 2013 World Series. Wacha suffered a 6-1 loss to Boston in the title clincher, allowing five hits and six earned runs in just 3 2/3 innings.

Wacha appeared to be on the rotation bubble for the Mets exiting spring training, but a pair of injuries cleared the way for him to join the club’s regular starters. Right-handers Noah Syndergaard (right elbow) and Marcus Stroman (left calf) are currently on the injured list, with Syndergaard placed on the 45-day IL.
