Florida hit a grim milestone on Saturday. According to HuffPost, the state's count of new novel coronavirus COVID-19 exceeded that of New York's. Nationwide, cases increased by 74,848, the second-highest daily count on record. Total COVID-19 deaths in the country topped 1,000 for the fourth consecutive day. New York chalked up an additional 750 cases for a total of 411,200 by the end of the day Friday, with a death toll of 33,600.

NDRF rescues villagers, livestock in Assam's flood-affected areas

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have carried out rescue operation in flood-affected areas in Assam. The teams evacuated villagers and livestock and transported them to safer places from flood-affected areas of Dighirpam Bazar in Barpeta district on July 27. More than 100 people have also lost their lives in the flood-related incidents in Assam. 16 teams of NDRF have been deployed in the state.

Firefighters have so far failed to put out a huge oil well blaze which has been burning for two months after thousands of farming families in Assam state were forced from their homes.

Water level recedes in Brahmaputra river

Water level is gradually receding in Brahmaputra river amid flood conditions in parts of Assam. Water level had crossed danger-mark by 8 cm in the river. "Water level is currently at 49.52, the level is expected to further go down," said Sadiqul Haq, Central Water Commission official.
