THANE: A 40-year-old man was arrested allegedly for sexually abusing a stray female dog on a foot over-bridge (FOB) at Wagle Estate on Tuesday.
The police said the accused is a resident of road no 16 in Wagle Estate and does odd jobs including that of manual scavenger and is also an addict.
According to the complainant, the heinous incident occurred at around 4.30pm on Tuesday at foot over-bridge opposite the old passport office.
The police said that some boys who would feed the stray dogs regularly in the locality, saw the man sodomising the hapless stray female dog and immediately brought to the attention of Aditi Nair, an animal rights activist.
“I along with the team informed the local police who were initially ‘reluctant’ to register a complaint in this regard but Nair, immediately escalated the case to Thane police commissioner Vivek Phansalkar, who strictly told the concerned police to immediately act and make an airtight case,” Nair informed.
Following his intervention, an FIR was registered on Wednesday under section 377 and section 11 (a) of the prevention of cruelty animal act 1960.
The Srinagar police of the Wagle estate division arrested the accused. The police had to press in the services of the veterinary department of the Zilla Parishad as the TMC’s veterinary doctor was not available due to medical reason, Nair said.
Prakash Nilewad, the ACP informed, “We are sincerely carrying out the probe and the accused was produced in the court and has been remanded to police custody for further investigation till 27 July.”
