Representative imageKALYAN: In a shocking incident, superstition lead to the murder of a 50-year-old man and his 72-year-old mother at Atali village near Kalyan on Saturday night.
The deceased have been identified as Pandarinath Tare (50) and his mother Chandubai Tare (72).
Police said they have arrested Pandarinath's niece Kavita Tare (27), nephew Vinayak Tare (22), his 17-year-old son and a 35-year-old tantrik, Surendra Patil.
The police said that tantrik Patil, in whose contact the accused trio had come, had told them that Kavita has ‘supernatural powers’ in her body while his uncle Pandarinath and her grandmother Chandubai have ‘devil powers’ in their bodies.
Police said that on instructions of Patil, the trio on Saturday night put turmeric powder on the bodies of Pandarinath and Chandubai to remove devil powers from their bodies and started beating them up with bamboo sticks, which led to their deaths.
“We have arrested all of them under murder charges and other sections related to the The Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human and Other Inhuman, Evil And Aghori Practices and Black Magic act,” said Dattatreya Karale, additional commissioner of police, central region of Thane Police.
