Tamil Nadu: Ancient stone crusher found in Madurai

MADURAI: A stone that was used as a crusher for grinding oil seeds and millets was discovered on Sunday in a village on the outskirts of Madurai.
The stone belonged to the ninth century AD and it was found on agricultural land between V Periyakulam and Sarantangi village in Vadipatti taluk.
Lieutenant S Rajagopal, assistant professor of History, Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College, Madurai, along with his two students M Palanichamy and M Ramar visited the spot to inspect the stone.
The stone was cup-shaped with a 33 cm deep and 20 cm wide bevel in the middle. It’s outer and inner diameter was 64cm and 44cm, respectively.
Inscriptions on the stone were in Vattaluthu language that belonged to the early Pandiya period (ninth century AD).
The letters were shown to a renowned archaeologist from Madruai Dr C Santhalingam, who read it as, 'Katanutta naadi ituvitta cekku' meaning the crusher was made by Katan Utta Nadi.
"It may have been a crusher used for grinding grains and fodder," Rajagopal said.
