GREATER NOIDA: Three youths, two of them in their teens, died after a goods train ran over them in Dadri's Bodaki village on Thursday night, in yet another tragic accident on train line. The police said the deceased were sitting on the Delhi-Howrah railway track with earphones plugged in for watching videos on their mobile phones, and so could not hear the train sirens.
The men were identified as Jeetu, his brother Deepak and their friend Sonu, who was in his early 20s. While the two brothers were students of class IX and class X, respectively, Deepak worked as a driver in Bodaki village where they lived with their parents.
The incident came to light at around 8:30pm when the train driver informed the police. "We received information from the train's driver who had stopped the train at a distance from the accident spot. He said the three were watching videos on their mobile phones and were also wearing earphones due to which they neither saw the light nor heard the siren. He applied the brakes but the train could not be stopped on time," said Dinesh Singh, station house officer, Dadri police station.
Ghanshyam, the father of Jeetu and Deepak, told police that the two boys had left home for a post-dinner walk. "The track is very close to the deceased person's house. In the past couple of months, the movement of trains had stopped due to the lockdown and villagers had started gathering around the tracks. We made announcements in the area that the trains have resumed and warned people from not going on the tracks," Singh said.
