Goa CM Pramod Sawant (File photo)PANAJI: CM Pramod Sawant said on Friday that the state government has decided to construct a new Raj Bhavan, and that initial processes like identification of land and its design could be tendered before April next year.
Sawant told TOI that the decision was taken following a PWD report that it has become difficult to repair and maintain the structure. The Cabo, which houses the Raj Bhavan, was the seat of power during the Portuguese era, and also residence of the governor general. While the exact date of construction of the structure is not known, it is understood to be 1534, according to its official website.
“It’s an old structure and it has been repaired and maintained by the government for decades,” Sawant said. “As per the reports received, it is time to go in for a new one. Once the new Raj Bhavan is constructed, the present one at Dona Paula will be preserved and maintained as a heritage monument.”
Chief secretary Parimal Rai said that the new Raj Bhavan should have sufficient space for three helicopters to land. Principal chief engineer, PWD, Uttam Parsekar, said that the maintenance of the existing building would be done well.
