'Carnage from start to finish': Jockey hospitalised, horse euthanased

Jockey Andrew Adkins is in hospital and Hugh Bowman may be in hot water following a horror fall in the opening race at Rosehill on Saturday.

Five jockeys were hauled before the stewards and one more was counting his blessings following the incident involving Bowman's Smart Image and Adkins' Hot 'N' Hazy, who was euthanased at the track.

A hush fell over the crowd as fellow jockeys sprinted to Adkins' side, fearing the worst for the horseman. He was taken to Westmead Hospital with a suspected broken leg, collarbone and ribs after champion hoop Bowman, in his first ride back from a winter break, appeared to shift out on the eventual winner.

Bowman tried to force a run to the outside of Glyn Schofield's Mr Colorful but made contact with the tiring Hot 'N' Hazy who subsequently fell heavily.

The highly-touted two-year-old, from the Danny Williams stable, was unable to be saved.

Stewards adjourned an inquiry until such time as Adkins is available to give evidence but not before calling in Bowman, Schofield, Louise Day (Sunborn), Lee Magorrian (Oscar Zulu) and Jason Collett (Lady Banff). The latter three's mounts were also knocked out of contention by the drama.

"The whole race was just carnage from start to finish," Day, who did well to keep her mount on her feet, said after the finish. "Horses going everywhere."

It continued a horror run for the 22-year-old Adkins, who was also involved in a fall on day one of The Championships at Randwick last year.

He also suffered a broken wrist in a separate incident late last year.

Earlier this week, Williams called Hot 'N' Hazy the best horse he has had in a decade.
