Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover working on AI-based predictive touchscreen

The technology will make use of a gesture tracker that pairs with contextual information such as user profile, interface and environmental design to guess what the user is thinking of doing with the infotainment system, all of it in real-time.

If touchscreens already seem futuristic to you, what about a touchscreen that you may not need to touch at all? Jaguar Land Rover may be bringing in just that kind of technology now.

Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover has tied up with the University of Cambridge to work on a new kind of touchscreen.

The technology is of course patented and is being called predictive touch. This works in conjunction with a variety of sensors to “predict” where a user will touch the screen as soon as their finger is pointed towards it.

The technology will make use of a gesture tracker that pairs with contextual information such as user profile, interface and environmental design to guess what the user is thinking of doing with the infotainment system, all of it in real-time.

JLR says the new technology can also be implemented into existing touchscreens through updates, provided the sensors are available along with the user data.

The new tech, under the company’s Destination Zero vision, is already in high-readiness levels, with the company saying that lab tests and road trials have already shown that predictive touch only helps to reduce the driver’s interaction with the screen.
