2020 Land Rover Defender Meets Its Iconic Predecessor In Comparison Test

Like one of its biggest rivals, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, the Land Rover Defender has been massively upgraded for the new generation.

Unlike the Merc, though, it looks nothing like its predecessor on the outside, as everything has been soften up to better fall in line with the British automaker’s modern 4x4s. The same can be said about the interior, which is now more premium, comfortable, spacious and loaded with gear.

By comparison, its predecessor’s boxy styling made it instantly recognizable. There’s a huge market for parts available for it, so finding a stock one is tricky, but not impossible. Upgrades include pretty much everything, from engine swaps to elevated ground clearances, snorkels, trail lights and modern infotainment systems.

The yellow example detailed on video by TFLClassics was made in 1995 and packs a 3.9-liter V8 with 182 HP and 232 lb-ft (315 Nm) of torque. That’s way less compared to the 2020MY’s 395-horsepower and 406 pound-feet (550 Nm) 3.0-liter inline-six, which is not only punchier, but also more frugal and friendlier to the environment, plus it boasts an improved towing capacity.

The new one has a sticker price of $80,709 as it features several options, but its predecessor is also for sale, and at $65,000, it’s not far behind. Sure, it all comes down to what each individual wants from proper off-roader in the end, but if you had to choose, which of the two would you get and why? You can make up your mind while watching the video, which further highlights the big differences between the two Defenders.
