Welcoming the education department’s decision to allow teachers to work from home, leader of Opposition Digambar Kamat urged the state government to make optimum use of intranet facilities to promote online and distance education.

“The government now needs to ensure that hassle-free network connection is made available to every student and teacher across the state. I am disturbed by the reports of students climbing hills and walking three to four kilometres in some villages in search of network connection to attend the online classes,” he said.

Kamat had, last week, submitted a memorandum to the Governor on the issue wherein he also raised the fears of teachers and parents. “I had categorically emphasised in my memorandum to the Governor about the fear and anxiety in the minds of teachers of getting infected with coronavirus after attending schools and educational institutions. I had also requested the government to make optimum use of intranet facility in Goa,” said Kamat.

The intranet facility has already reached almost all the talukas and panchayats in the state with the laying of underground fibre optic cables, he said. “The government needs to take the local cable operators into confidence and come out with a plan, which will help the said facility to reach every household in Goa,” he said.
