Covid-19: PMK leader urges Tamil Nadu govt to take strong measures against people who don’t wear masks

CHENNAI: PMK leader S Ramadoss on Friday urged the Tamil Nadu government to intensify its battle against Covid-19.
A day after the Jharkhand government decided to penalise those not wearing masks with a fine extending up to Rs 1 lakh and a maximum two-year imprisonment, Ramadoss said the Tamil Nadu government should come forward with such strong measures.
The government should also ensure that the public adhered to the rules such as following social distancing, wearing masks and practising self-hygiene to prevent the spread of the virus.
The state registered a new hike of Covid-19 cases on Thursday by reporting 6,472 fresh cases.
The first case of Covid-19 was reported on March 7 in the state and the number of positive cases touched 5,409 in the next two months, he said, pointing out the state’s reported cases just on Thursday (July 23) surpassed this figure.
Without following the norms or precautionary measures, several people sneaked out of Chennai and Bengaluru to their hometowns across Tamil Nadu. Most of them failed to self-quarantine or seek medical care on reaching their native district. This had led to the spike in coronavirus cases in districts now, he said.
“Lack of cooperation from the public is one of the main reasons for the present scenario,” he said and urged the public to support the government’s measures in containing the spread of the virus.
He lauded the state government for ramping up testing, which crossed over 62,000 samples a day, and noted that the government could do better in testing samples.
