Sushant Singh Rajput and Sanjana Sanghi starrer Dil Bechara is streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar. The film marks the directorial debut of casting director Mukesh Chhabra. It is based on novelist John Green’s bestseller The Fault in Our Stars. The book was adapted into a 2014 Hollywood movie of the same name and featured Ansel Elgort and Shailene Woodley in the lead roles. The main plot of Dil Bechara revolves around two characters, Kizie and Manny. While Kizie has thyroid cancer, Manny had osteosarcoma. The journey that they take together as they help each evolve and embrace life’s imperfections is the driving force of the narrative.
Recently, the female lead of the film, Sanjana Sanghi spoke about her experience of making the movie with Sushant Singh Rajput and Mukesh Chhabra to indianexpress.com. The actor said, “We are in the process of releasing songs or BTS every day, and it’s like revisiting all those moments once again. Sushant and I shared a very special bond. We connected on so many things – academia, dance and food. There was just no end to our conversations. Since Dil Bechara is from Kizie’s perspective, I was shooting every day, while he had a breather here and there. I remember as soon as I would finish, I would call him and we would either be just listening to Taare Ginn or discussing Yuval’s (Yuval Noah Harari) books.”
Sanjana also talked about her character in Dil Bechara and how much she relates to Kizie. She said, “Every best friend or people close to me have been messaging me how I react just like her. Not just me but even Sushant, there is going to be a lot of us in these characters. And I think that is why we were chosen because the director wanted me to bring something to the table. However, I wish I was Kizie. She is far more lovable and spunky than I am.”
Sharing a clip of the film, Ravi Dubey wrote Sushant Singh Rajput's dialogue from his film Dil Bechara, 'I am a fighter and I have fought well.' The actor added, "If prayers make a life then the amount of love and prayers you have earned Sushant, no one will ever be able to earn it."
After watching Dil Bechara, Bhumi Pednekar wrote, "Full of emotions, overwhelmed and can't stop tearing up. What a class act. So endearing and seamlessly done Sushant. Kizzy, Manny and their world is so lovely, such a sweet and moving film. Full of love."
Director Hansal Mehta showered praise on Mukesh Chhabra's directorial debut Dil Bechara. He mentioned that the "charming film" left him teary-eyed.
"It is a charming film, a good adaptation and a wonderful debut by Mukesh Chhabra. The choice of location, the cinematography and ensemble cast are very good. Watch #DilBechara to remember Sushant and his body of work. Watch it also for Mukesh Chhabra's assured debut. The film had me weeping... The tragedy of a life gone too soon or the tragedy unfolding with young lives on screen both had me muddled up and teary eyed - even in moments of humour. And that title track by @arrahman and #AmitabhBhattacharya is a mesmerising melody. #DilBechara" Mehta tweeted.
When a fan asked Amit Sadh if he has watched Sushant Singh Rajput's film, the actor replied, "Not yet! I will... gathering courage... I will soon be! I have to." Earlier, Sadh also requested people to not rate the film. "Can we pls not do ratings fr this weekend ... please !! People /critics ... Just some love, remembrance and appreciate the magic!" he tweeted.

Indianexpress.com's Kameshwari says, "As a story, Dil Bechara didn’t impress me much. But it’s just Sushant Singh Rajput. He’s there and yet he’s not. The fight between our minds and hearts to realise he’s not there anymore fills the heart with a pain unexplainable. Sushant as Manny is to be cherished. Also, Sanjana Sanghi has done an incredible job as Kizzie."

In her review of Dil Bechara, The Indian Express film critic Shubhra Gupta wrote, "A life-threatening disease plus sparkling young lives plus romance is a ready-made recipe for winsome smiles plus tugging-at-the-heart-strings plus tears. But the film is beset by choppiness, and that colours the characters of the Rajinikanth-loving, very filmi Manny and the sweet Kizie, who adores an obscure singer, him more than her."
