Representative imageJIND: Bereaved Jind man, who recently lost two daughters — Muskan, 11, and Nisha, 7 — in an incident of drowning, was arrested on Thursday night for allegedly murdering them and his three other children, a daughter and two sons, all below 11 years, on advice of an occultist.
The Jind police on July 20 had recovered the bodies of the two sisters, who had gone missing on July 15 from Didwara village of Safidon town, from the Hansi-Butana Link (HBL) canal.
The two sisters had gone missing from the village early on July 15, after which a missing complaint was lodged by their parents. Their father, Jumma, is a labourer and mother is pregnant with her sixth child.
The 38-year-old man had told TOI earlier this week that he had lost all his five children over a period of five years.
Man confessed his crime before villagers twice
First, my son was found dead while sleeping five years ago. After two years, one of my daughters suddenly died while playing. Then, around a year ago, my second son started vomiting and later died, and now, my two daughters are gone. I am seeking justice and want strict action against the culprits,” he said.
Interestingly, the accused had not approached any doctor or hospital for post-mortem of his three children earlier.
Safidon additional superintendent of police (ASP) Ajit Singh Sekhawat had said earlier the cops had registered a missing persons’ report but as the two bodies were found, raising suspicions about the manner of their death, the cops had registered a murder case instead. He allegedly fed his two daughters some drug to make them sleep soundly and when they were unconscious, he threw them into the canal.
With all the sympathy for the couple for losing five children in quick succession, it was the man’s admission to some neighbours about his crime that raised suspicions about the deaths. Shocked villagers took him to the police but the cops didn't take any strict action. The man again admitted the truth before some 30 villagers and the police was called to the village and the man was handed over to them. The man had told the villagers that he had committed the heinous crime due to his poor financial condition.
Confirming the development, DIG/SSP of Jind district Ashvin Shenvi said, “Prima facie, he accepted his crime but more details are awaited. We are investigating the matter and soon will disclose the incident" he added.
