BENGALURU: The controversial 10,100 bed Covid care centre at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC), largest in the country, will officially begin operations after chief minister B S Yediyurappa directed officials to send the asymptomatic patients to the centre from Saturday. However, officials say it will begin in full fledged manner from Monday (July 27)
Concluding his review meetings of the eight zones in Bengaluru on Friday, the south zone being the last of them, Yediyurappa directed officials to operationalise the BIEC CCC and ease the pressure on hospitals within the city.
In a release from the CMO, Yediyurappa has said: “Start operationalising the BIEC CCC by sending the asymptomatic patients there. This will help ease the pressure on hospitals within the city for serious Covid patients and also the non-Covid patients.”
The CM also directed the bureaucracy to ensure there is a minimum reservation of beds in the various government hospitals for even non-Covid patients as most of them are being used for “covid purpose” only.
However, according to government officials the centre will only open from Monday as there were a few loose ends, with deployment of housekeeping staff and other such requirements.
CCC in-charge and senior IAS officer Rajendra Kumar Kataria said “dry runs” at the centre have begun and are scheduled for today and tomorrow (Saturday).
“We are carrying out a dry run today and tomorrow and fixing all on priority. Doctors/staff nurses/support staff on site training and dry run is going on,” said Kataria.
CMO officials say BBMP Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad has assured that one block in the BIEC has been opened for immediate shifting while another is scheduled to open by Thursday.
At the meeting, Yediyurappa has asked officials to provide transportation facilities for the patients to be shifted to BIEC from the containment zones, if required.
“However, if patients want, they can themselves drive down or be driven to the centre with ample parking facilities available for private vehicles. There are going to be no parking charges,” said a CMO official.
Help desks at pvt hospitals for Covid patients
Chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday directed the bureaucracy to launch a government help desk at every private hospital to assist the Covid patients.
Citing an example of one such pilot move in Yelahanka, a few legislators from the south zone of BBMP suggested that it can be made available at every major hospital.
“The help desk will be manned by our nodal officer for that particular private hospital along with one or two other persons. Their job will be to ensure that patients do not have to run around seeking bed availability. If there is no bed available at the particular hospital then it will be the nodal officer’s responsibility to shift the patient to the next closest hospital,” said a CMO official.
The help desks are likely to be set up at all major private hospitals with over 100 beds.
