The future of work: Expert from Australia's biggest tech company says staff should only spend 20 per cent of their time in the office

  • Tech expert reckons workers should come in for the equivalent of a day a week
  • Dom Price from Atlassian said staff should only gather to solve big problems

Companies should expect their workers to spend just 20 per cent of their time in the office as working from home becomes the new norm, according to an expert from Australia's leading tech company.

With businesses adapting to working from home due to the coronavirus, many have reported their employees remain productive despite not coming in.

Dom Price, a work futurist at Atlassian, suggested Australians should only come into the office 20 per cent of the time - equivalent to one day of the working week - unless they don't have the ability to work from home.

'I think the 20 per cent is where you have a really gnarly, complex problem that you've never solved before, where you generally want the diversity of mindsets,' he told the Australian Financial Review

Dr Sean Gallagher, director of Centre for the New Workforce at Swinburne University, agreed with Mr Price, saying the office is not just for 'routine work'.

'I actually think this is a fantastic opportunity to completely reimagine what we mean by work and why we actually come together into a physical space,' he said.

'I think increasingly [it will be] about finding and framing problems. [And] how we tell stories and create compelling narratives around a vision.'

Mr Price said now is the perfect opportunity for companies and bosses to implement new strategies with their employees to continue encouraging innovation.

'Ignore perfection because it will kill innovation. We've got to experiment with imperfection, and so many leaders struggle to do that.

'It's not fail fast. It's learn fast.'
