Shah, Joshi inaugurate BCCL’s reclaimed eco-park online

Dhanbad: Union home minister Amit Shah and coal minister Prahlad Joshi on Thursday inaugurated the reclaimed and newly developed eco-park of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) located at Katras here online from the national capital as part of the country-wide plantation drive 'Vriksharopan Abhiyan'.
The park, developed in Ramkanli colliery area of BCCL’s's Katras mines, is named Parasnath Park and themed on the famed Parasnath temple in Giridih district. Spread over 4.5 acres, the park is developed over heaps of soil, dust and rock generated from the coal mines ahead of coal excavation. BCCL is a subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL).
During inauguration of the park, Shah said, “Nature is our mother and it can’t be exploited.”
Joshi said altogether 13 ecological parks, including the one in Katras, have been developed by CIL at various places across the country. He said Thursday's plantation drive was conducted at 125 sites covering a 6,000-acre area in 38 districts of 10 states. He added that the government plans to carry out six lakh plantations during the monsoon.
BCCL technical director (planning) Chanchal Goswami, who was present at the site, unveiled the plaque during the inauguration. He said, “BCCL will plant 20,000 saplings as part of the nationwide drive beginning today with a plantation of 7,000 saplings.”
Katras area general manager Jitendra Mallick said the park development began in 2014 and they have taken technical help from the Forest Research Institute Dehradun in selection of plants for the park.
He said, “The park is a three-layered structure. In the first level, we have placed ornamental plants and developed a canopy-like structure offering a seating area to visitors.”
Mallick also said, “There is an open-air theatre studded with a wide variety of flower and fruit-bearing plants in the middle level. We have also developed a small water body and created a zone for children where they can enjoy rain dance. The lowest level has fruit-bearing plants.”
He added that the company plans to develop a temple at the top level on the lines of the Parasnath temple.
