A woman who recovered from Covid-19 donating blood plasma at a school in Dharavi on ThursdayMUMBAI: A day after adding a record high of 10,576 cases, the state on Thursday saw its highest deaths recorded in a day. Maharashtra reported 298 Covid-19 deaths, taking its toll to 12,854. The highest deaths reported for a day until Thursday was 295, on July 4. The state accounts for over 40% of Covid deaths in India and has been struggling to bring down the mortality rate below 3.6% for a while.
Of the 298 deaths, Mumbai reported 55 or 18%. The total fatalities in the city rose to 5,930, close to the 6,000 mark. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region, excluding Mumbai, registered 75 deaths. Within MMR, the highest mortalities were seen from Vasai-Virar Corporation (23) followed by Kalyan-Dombivli (18). The total deaths reported in MMR are now 2,719. Pune division, which includes Pune city, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Solapur and Satara, reported 82 deaths. The highest within the division came from Pune city that saw 37 deaths.
Maharashtra also reported the second-highest addition of 9,895 cases in a day, taking its caseload to 3,47,502. Mumbai added 12.5% or 1,245 cases of the state’s addition, taking its tally to 1,05,923. However, for the second day in a row, MMR’s tally (2,727) was ahead, taking its tally to 1,08,027 cases. Maharashtra now has 1,40,092 active cases and Mumbai 22,598.
An official said the rapid increase in cases in MMR was discussed in Thursday’s cabinet meeting. The administration was directed to add bed capacity and ensure containment zones are regulated. In Mumbai, where cases have stabilised, civic authorities said a massive screening drive would be kicked off for frontliners from Friday. “We will begin antigen testing for policemen, conservancy workers in all wards. We will target those above 45-50 years of age, including asymptomatics. Over 15-20 days, we target to test 25,000-30,000 frontline workers,” said AMC Suresh Kakani.
In Thane, 317 cases were reported, taking its tally to 16,859. Kalyan-Dombivli reported 366 cases and 9 deaths, taking the caseload to 17,389, with 281 deaths. Ulhasnagar reported 161 patients and 5 deaths, taking its cases to 6,178 with 102 deaths. Also, 37 villages in rural Palghar have reported Covid cases.
The only silver lining is discharges reached 1.94 lakh.
