Rs 65 lakh collected from people not wearing masks in Madurai district

MADURAI: More than Rs 65 lakh has been collected as fine from people not wearing masks in public places. Out of this, the highest fine of Rs 26 lakh was collected in the Madurai city limits.
There was better compliance among village people. In villages, 1,398 people have been fined a total of Rs 1.88 lakh.
The rural police collected over Rs 14.52 lakhs from 8,033 persons.
The total fine collected in the municipalities was Rs 3.25 lakh. It was Rs 9.38 lakh in town panchayats.
Efforts are being taken by the district administration and the Madurai Corporation, in co-ordination with police, to ensure that the people wear masks in public places.
