The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education will introduce two different mathematics papers at the SSC examination, from the academic year 2020-21; the level 1 mathematics paper for those desiring to continue with this subject in the future, while level 2 mathematics paper for those who want to reject the particular subject during their future education.

The Academic Council of the Goa Board in its meeting dated February 24 had decided to introduce level 2 mathematics subject, for Class X.

“The syllabus of level 2 mathematics subject would be same as that of level 1; only question paper will be different with difficulty level of the questions on lower side. As the syllabus is same, no extra teacher will be provided to conduct the classes of level 2 mathematics subject. There will not be separate classroom teaching for students studying level 2 mathematics and if so, no extra work load will be counted for teaching

level 2 mathematics,” Goa Board secretary Bhagirath Shetye informed to the secondary schools vide a circular.

“The students who do not desire to continue mathematics after Class X and do not want to pursue science stream after Class X, can opt for level 2 mathematics subject,” the circular further informed, pointing out, “The level 1 mathematics students with remark ‘Needs Improvement’ would be permitted to answer level 2 mathematics paper at the supplementary examination, with the prior permission of the Goa Board.”

The circular also stated that the students opting for level 2 mathematics paper at the SSC examination would not be permitted to take admission for science stream after passing this exam.

“The syllabus, weightage to the content and model question papers for mathematics subject are available on Goa Board’s official website,” informed the circular, adding that all the heads of the schools are informed to identify students interested in opting for level 2 mathematics paper, at SSC public examination of March 2021 and send their names by September 30, 2020, to the joint secretary, academic section of the Goa Board for further action.”

The circular also maintained that last-minute request would not be accepted.

The objective behind providing an option to the students to choose any one of these two mathematics papers, having different difficulty levels, is to allow them to pass in the particular subject. Many students were found to be failing in subjects like mathematics and English at the SSC level.
