AMRITSAR: In a massive drive against drugs, the Tarn Taran police have frozen assets worth around Rs 81 crores of as many as 75 narcotics smugglers including cross border smugglers within a year’s period.
While talking to TOI on Friday, senior superintendent of police (SSP), Dhruv Dahiya informed that following clearance from the center’s revenue department, district police had frozen assets of 75 smugglers worth around Rs 81.21 lakhs.
Giving details, he informed that police froze property of notorious smugglers Jagjit Singh, residents of Sheron village and Balwinder Singh, resident of Havelian village worth around Rs 11 crore and Rs 10 crore respectively .
People resort to smuggling of narcotics only for profit motives and freezing their properties have proved to be successful measures to break their backbone by not allowing them to enjoy the moveable and immovable properties made through the ill-gotten money.
Assets of a notorious women smuggler Jasbir Kaur and her relatives worth around Rs 50 lakh have also been frozen.
These smugglers have developed a wide network across the border and would smuggle narcotics into India from there to distribute locally, in state and also across the nation .
"Today police froze the properties of two smugglers Malket Singh and Jagjit Singh worth Rs 71. 6 lakhs”, said Dahiya.
Similar action has also been taken against the smugglers who were found in possession of medicinal drugs in commercial quantities in the district.
On July 22, police froze assets worth around Rs 88 lakhs of a smuggler Lakhwinder Singh, resident of Dubli village falling under police station Sadar Patti. Police had recovered 3100 and 2300 intoxicating tablets and capsules respectively from his possession.
Stating that such measures help to bring down the incidents of smuggling, the SSP said “freezing of assets helps break the economic backbone of the drug smugglers and drug supply chains. It also acts an effective psychological deterrent against drug trafficking”
Meanwhile Dahiya informed that police were investigating into the alleged incident of making a dalit man to drink urine and would comply with the directions of the Punjab State Scheduled Castes Commission.
