BOSTON --- A handful of Red Sox players and staff members took a knee during the national anthem Friday night.
Jackie Bradley Jr., Alex Verdugo, Carlos Febles and Tom Goodwin were among those engaged in peaceful protest prior to Boston’s contest with the Orioles at Fenway Park.
Ceremonies marking the Black Lives Matter movement preceded the anthem, which was sung by Springfield native Michelle Brooks-Thompson. Players from both teams held a black ribbon during the Unity Moment, one that stretched from beyond both corner infield bases around home plate.
Michael Chavis was also among the Red Sox players who took a knee prior to the anthem. He stood while Brooks-Thompson offered her rendition and put his right hand on Bradley’s right shoulder. Baltimore’s players and staff members acted in unison, taking a knee for the presentation and standing for the anthem.
…..More to come.
