Congress instigating people against government: Assam BJP

GUWAHATI: Assam BJP has hit out at Congress for ‘instigating’ the people against their government allegedly by furnishing false information on the funds released from the Centre for floods over the years.
Chief spokesperson of the state BJP, Rupam Goswami, on Thursday alleged that the opposition Congress has been trying to get political mileage by circulating false data of the financial assistance that Assam has received from the Centre during the UPA and NDA tenures.
Refuting the charges levelled by Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora that BJP is not giving much importance to the Assam floods, Goswami said, “During the tenure of UPA I and UPA II, phase-wise, Rs 1209.18 crore and Rs 1231 crore were released under the disaster management heads. But during the first tenure of the NDA government in the Centre (2014-19), Rs 2302.62 crore and during the second tenure till now, Rs 889.10 crore have been released in the last one and a half year. This shows which government in the Centre has been more dedicated towards Assam.”
In another analysis, he said that during the 15-year Congress rule (2001-2016) in Assam, Rs 3,717.86 crore SDRF funds were spent with an annual expenditure of Rs 247 crore. He, however, said that the performance of the BJP-led government has been far better in the last four years, as the corresponding expenditure now stands at Rs 2,289.81 crore, with an annual average of Rs 572 crore.
“At a time when every BJP minister, MP, MLA and public representative has been putting in untiring efforts to help the flood-affected people, along with the administration, the Congress is trying to confuse the public with false data. After being in power for so many years, the Congress did not try to solve issues like erosion. Now, they are shedding crocodile tears during floods,” said Goswami.
