Toyota To Slightly Reduce Its Global Production In August

Toyota will reduce the global production of its vehicles through August as it continues its recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

The Japanese automaker says it aims to produce 15,000 fewer vehicles in August than originally planned, representing a 2 per cent decrease from the nearly 750,000 vehicles it was expected to produce. This cut is minor compared to the 10 per cent cut in July and the 40 per cent cut in June.

Of the 15,000 fewer vehicles being produced, there will be a reduction of 6,000 vehicles in the United States and 9,000 fewer built in overseas markets. These plans represent a production cut of 9 per cent from a year ago.

Earlier this week, Toyota revealed that an employee working at its headquarters had tested positive for coronavirus after developing symptoms earlier in the month. The automaker stated that it disinfected the affected work areas on July 17 and restarted operations shortly afterwards, Reuters reports.

In separate changes brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, Toyota will skip media briefings for its fiscal first and third quarterly results and will instead only release filings.

While Toyota, like most other carmakers, has been negatively impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, it has still unveiled a number of new models in recent months. One of the most significant vehicles added to its range is the Corolla Cross. Although there are currently no plans to sell the SUV in the United States, it will be sold in a number of markets and thanks to the world’s ongoing fascination with crossovers and SUVs, could prove to be a winner.
