10-month-old among 8 Covid deaths, Ranchi gets 100+ cases

Ranchi/Jamshedpur: A 10-month-old infant became the youngest Covid casualty in Jharkhand as the state recorded eight coronavirus deaths in 24 hours until 9pm on Tuesday. The Covid death toll in Jharkhand now stands at 61 – with 46 of these in the month of July. The mortality rate in the state has steadily risen in a month – almost doubling from 0.52% on June 21 to 0.98% on Tuesday.
Among the eight casualties, two deaths were reported from East Singhbhum, Dhanbad and Seraikela-Kharsawan each and one each from Ranchi and Ramgarh, the state IDSP cell claimed.
Meanwhile, the number of Covid 19 infections in Jharkhand crossed 6,000 mark on Tuesday with 418 infections detected from 23 districts in the past 24 hours (including 44 from East Singhbhum on Monday midnight). Jharkhand now has a caseload of 6,195, of which 3,192 are active and 2,942 have recovered (including 107 on Tuesday).
Of the new cases, Ranchi (106 cases), Pakur (65) and Godda (35) recorded their biggest single-day spikes. Ranchi now has 635 active cases, the most after East Singhbhum (568) and if the currents trends continue, both will have a total caseload of 1,000+ in the next couple of days.
Among others, Latehar reported 19 infections followed by Sahibganj (17), Dhanbad (16), Seraikela-Kharsawan (12); East Singhbhum, Chatra, Giridih, Hazaribag and Ramgarh (10 each) and West Singhbhum (11). Lohardaga, Deoghar, Palamu, Bokaro, Gumla, Garhwa, Koderma, Khunti, Simdega, and Dumka recorded new cases in single digits.
In East Singhbhum, a 58-year-old man from Sonari and a 60-year-old woman from Kadma localities in Jamshedpur died at Tata Main Hospital (TMH). In the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district, a 10-month-old girl from Adityapur, who was admitted to TMH with high fever on July 18, died in the early hours. A 40-year-old man from Dhatkidih, who was at TMH with respiratory ailments since July 11, died of the virus at noon.
Late on Monday night, a 40-year-old resident of Bistupur, died at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital. A Ghatshila man died at TMH. In Ranchi’s Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims), a man from Ramgarh, admitted with multiple ailments, died at Covid 19 block. Another death was reported in Dhanbad.
Meanwhile, state water resources minister Mithilesh Thakur was discharged from Rims Covid-19 ward after his test results came negative. Thakur was admitted on July 7.
