176 test positive for virus, 121 discharged in district

Coimbatore: There was no let-up in Covid-19 cases in the district on Tuesday when 176 people tested positive for the virus and one succumbed to it. However, 121 patients recovered and were discharged from hospitals in the day. While the district has recorded 2,359 Covid-19 cases so far, there are only 1,314 active cases now.
Among the new cases are a 16-year-old boy from PRS police quarters, a 33-year-old man from E2 police quarters in Podanur, three Rapid Action Force personnel and a family of three residing at the Government College of Technology quarters.
People in the containment zones are, meanwhile, growing restless as they continue to report new cases. People say their livelihoods are getting affected.
Around noon, around 30 women from Periyar Road, which was cordoned off as a containment zone a week ago, protested for an hour demanding officials to lift the restrictions.
Pointing out that there was just one case on their street, Nagaraj, a resident, said the containment measure was too extreme in their area. “The patient is hospitalized, and his family members have tested negative for the virus. We are ready to take immunity boosters. Then, why should our street be closed? We are losing salary as we are not allowed to go to work. We may lose our jobs too.”
The virus spread remains unchecked in densely populated areas in the city and rural pockets of Kurichi and Periyanaickenpalayam, among others.
Eight people were tested positive from Muthusamy Colony and Abhirami Nagar in the Selvapuram cluster. Neighbouring Savithri Nagar saw four new cases and Telugu Street, three. In Muthusamy Colony, a source said, a 58-year-old woman, her five-year-old granddaughter and neighbour were tested positive.
Town Hall area has also been seeing cases for the past one week. On Tuesday, the busy Rangai Gowder Street accounted for seven cases and Suriyan Nagar, six. New cases were also reported from Karuppa Gounder Street and Lingappa Chetti Street. All these cases might have links to the Selvapuram cluster.
Kuniyamuthur area reported six new cases, while a family of four was tested positive in neighbouring East Sugunapuram. In RS Puram, new cases were reported from Kanusamy Nagar (1), West Periyasamy Road (1) and Thomas Street (1).
An official identified the deceased as a 62-year-old man. He was shifted to the ESI Hospital from the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital after he tested positive. He died on Tuesday morning. The state is yet to officially record the death.
