Ludhiana: From January 1 to March 23 as many as eight murder cases were reported in the city, whereas from March 24 to June 8 as many as 11 murder cases were reported in the city.
In three murders reported before lockdown, neighbours were involved and in other three cases illicit relation was the reason. During lockdown, in four cases illicit relation and suspicion of illicit relation was the reason behind murder, but the second major reason was the intention to rob people. Besides, in two murders were of family relations, two due to rivalry and one was by co-worker over an argument.
Before lockdown
Neighbours involved in murder
On January 23, gangster Sukhwinder Singh Moni of Jawahar Nagar, along with his accomplice, shot dead Harjinder Singh Jindi, a financer from same the locality. The victim was shot dead when he was sitting at a friend’s clinic in the busy Jawahar Nagar market. The gangster was suspecting Jindi to be a police informer and so he killed him.
On February 15, police arrested Sajjan Singh, 50, of Hazoori Bagh Colony for attacking a mother daughter duo, Surinder Kaur (70) and Rubbi (33) of the same locality over an argument. The accused attacked them with a hoe. Surinder Kaur died while her daughter survived.
On March 11, Deepak Kumar (20) of Daba was stabbed to death when he came to rescue a neighbouring woman during a fight. Deepak had intervened for rescuing Ranju, who had a fight with her neighbour Beeru over a petty issue.
Illicit relations
Three murders were caused due to illicit relations, which included one on January 3, in which Ranjit Singh Chauhan (350 of Rishi Nagar, a labourer, was found murdered in an isolated place near Ayali Kalan on Friday morning. Some stray dogs were eating the body when some commuters noticed it. According to cops, the body had several injury marks on his body and moreover, his left arm had been chopped off. He was killed by his neighbour Deepu, who allegedly had illicit relation with Chauhan’s wife.
On January 31, suspecting to have illicit relation with his wife, Raj Singh of Rahon road killed his nephew Surjit Singh (28) of Nawanshahr by hitting the victim with a blunt weapon in Raj’s factory in Jodhewal area.
In the third case reported on March 16, Vijay Parkash (35) thrashed his wife Tara Devi (35) of Pakhowal Road to death in an inebriated condition. The couple had a fight as the man was suspecting his wife of having illicit relation with her nephew. During the fight, the accused hit the woman with a pan and then hit her head into the wall. Thereafter, the woman got seriously injured and got unconscious. However, the drunk husband fell asleep after doing this. Later on, in the morning he realised that his wife had died.
Other murder cases
On February 11, an unidentified woman was found murdered in the fields of Heera village. Clothes form her body had been removed and the body was also stuffed into a water pipe.
On February 18, a rickshaw puller, Mohammad Chunchun (48) of Gurmel Park was found murdered near Tower Lane on Tibba road. He had been probably attacked by huge stones, leading to his death.
During Lockdown
Though the number of murders had slightly increased during the lockdown, however, the motive behind murder did change. Illicit relations, infidelity suspicion and intention of robbery were the main motives of murders.
Murder due to illicit relations
On March 29, Sukhbir Singh (25) was arrested for killing his wife Kamaljit Kaur (22) at Gahi Bhaini village of Koomkalan area. According to police, the man was suspecting his wife of having illicit relation with someone. It is alleged that the man was in an inebriated condition when he killed his wife with a wooden cot leg.
On May 12, Shakeela Bibi (30) was murdered by her husband Mohammad Rivani of Alamgir village. The woman was proving to be a hurdle in Rivani’s illicit relation with another woman. Rivani strangled his wife and dumped her body in a field.
Family relations
On June 6, following an argument over dishwashing, Rameshwar Lal (65) has killed his son Sudhir (22) by attacking him with a griddle and then with a wooden block in Jageer Colony of Tibba area
On May 24, a wife with the help of her son and a teenager daughter strangled her husband with a television wire in the house in Daresi area. It is alleged that the man wanted to develop physical relation with his biological daughter and earlier he had raped his step daughter and wife’s sister also.
On May 20, Jodhewal police arrested Rajinder Manocha of Chandarlok Colony and three contract killers for injuring Rajinder's brother Joginderpal Manocha and killing latter's son Girish Manocha over some monetary dispute. On May 13, the contract killers opened fire at the father-son duo outside their house.
Motive of loot
On May 29, the division number 5 police arrested Rajwinder Singh (19) of Manjit Nagar for killing Karan Chaudhary (19) of Janakpuri in a bid to rob him.
On May 20, vegetable vendor Ramu (20) was stabbed to death by accused Nitin Verma of Haibowal, Rohan Kumar of Haibowal Kalan and Tarun Kumar of Jassiyan Road with the motive to rob him.
On April 3, Ramesh Chand (45), a worker at a liquor vend at Chupki village of Sadar was killed for money by some miscreants. The accused attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon and escaped after locking the vend from outside.
Other cases
On March 24, Mahavir Sharma (52) of Haryana was killed by his co-worker Kulwinder in an inebriated condition. The duo had an argument after which Kulwinder killed Sharma.
On June 3, Ramandeep Singh (30) of Bulara village died as he was attacked by a notorious criminal, Sonu Kancha, along with his accomplices at Matharu Chowk in Shimlapuri. He was attacked on June 1 following some old rivalry.
On April 14, Geeta Rani (42) was found murdered at her rented accommodation in BRS Nagar. According to the police, the accused gagged the woman to death by covering her face with a polythene bag . It was her domestic help who first saw the body and raised an alarm. Importantly, the landlords of the house also live on the ground floor, however, they did not come to know about the murder.
