MUMBAI: For the sixth day in a row, the state added over 8,000 new Covid-19 cases (8,369), underlining the continued spread of the infection, particularly to semi-urban areas now. Maharashtra’s overall caseload is now 3,27,031. Of these, only 992 or 12% cases were from Mumbai. In a silver lining for the city, it was the fifth time in the past one month when the daily positive cases went below 1,000. With the city reporting 992 cases on Tuesday, also lowest in seven days, the total cases in Mumbai were 1,03,368. Mumbai has 23,704 active cases now, and Maharashtra 1,32,236.
The lowest infections the city has seen recently was on July 7, when 785 cases were reported. The dip though was short-lived as the next day, cases had nearly doubled. Dharavi, the city’s most concerning pocket once, reported 10 new patients on Tuesday. A state official said Mumbai has stabilised, but a decline in cases is yet to be seen.
The state reported 246 deaths on Tuesday, of which 25% or 62 deaths were from Mumbai. Following MMR (including Mumbai) that contributed 100 deaths, Pune recorded 74 deaths, while the Aurangabad division registered 21 deaths and Latur 14.
With Tuesday’s addition, the total death toll of the state stood at 12,276 and Mumbai’s was 5,817. The case fatality rate of the state and the city stood at 3.7% and 5.6% respectively. Senior officials in the state said the number of patients coming in critical condition is on a decline in cities like Mumbai and Pune as active surveillance has gone up, which is helping identify patients early on.
Areas in the fringes of cities are emerging as hotspots. “We are seeing that in Mumbai, with MMR reporting a lot of cases. We are also seeing more cases coming from Solapur’s rural areas than the corporation places. The same goes for Pimpri Chinchwad that is seeing a faster growth in cases than Pune,” said Dr Pradeep Awate, the state’s surveillance officer. MMR continued to add a large number of cases with 1,985 fresh ones, taking the total tally in the region to 1,02,853.
Kalyan-Dombivli reported 268 cases and 9 deaths, taking its tally to 16,602, with 264 deaths. The health department officials said with 381 patients there discharged in the last 24 hours, the recovery rate of the city reached 63%, which is higher than that of Thane. KDMC officials said even though Covid cases are rising due to large numbers of tests, their concentration is on recovery of patients and presently Kalyan-Dombivli’s death ratio of patients is only 1.59%, less than Thane and Navi Mumbai which have a death ratio 3% or above.
