VaikoCHENNAI: MDMK leader Vaiko petitioned Union minister of textile, women, and child development Smriti Irani, seeking her intervention to help spinning mills workers in Tamil Nadu.
Seven of the 24 mills under the National Textile Corporation (NTC) are in Tamil Nadu. They remained closed due to pandemic.
The employees were paid full salary for the period between March 24 and April 30 following the Prime Minister’s direction. However, they were paid by the corporation from May 1 to May 17. The corporation had earlier accepted to pay 50% of the salary for this period.
“The corporation accepted to give a full salary, but it has not been honoured till date,” said Vaiko in his letter to the minister on Tuesday.
On June 19, in a meeting chaired by the Coimbatore district collector with representatives of employees and the corporation management, they decided the salary dues would be paid by June 26. “But there has been no further development or guarantee for the salary of the employees,” said Vaiko.
He also requested the minister to take necessary action to reopen the mills in full operation capacity and provide employment for the workers.
