Coimbatore: The district treasury officials have announced that they will audit all sub-treasury accounts in Coimbatore district from now on.
The decision comes in the wake of a probe which revealed that an additional sub-treasury officer of Kinathukadavu in Coimbatore had allegedly swindled Rs 6 lakh from the office accounts.
The treasury officials came to know about the embezzlement and lodged a complaint with Kinathukadavu police against the additional sub-treasury officer and five others. The officer had killed himself in Kinathukadavu on June 21 this year.
A few months ago, the officer in question allegedly transferred the government’s fund through NEFT to accounts of five people and swindled at least Rs 6 lakh. Treasury officials are generally advised to transfer the amount through electronic clearance system (ECS) to beneficiary accounts. But he misused his power and misappropriated funds, officials said.
Senior treasury officials came to know of the malpractice at Kinathukadavu sub-treasury and lodged a police complaint against five people in June, days before the officer’s death.
According to sources, police should conduct inquiry with all the staff of the Kinathukadavu sub-treasury in connection with the misappropriation of funds as the treasury department attempted to hide the issue and protect some of its staff.
District treasury officer Raja said that a petition was already lodged before Kinathukadavu police in connection with the issue. “We plan to audit all the accounts in sub-treasuries,” said Raja.
