A major search was launched over fears a child has fallen into a river.

Aberystwyth Lifeboat crews Tweeted to say they are involved in the major operation to search for the child in the town.

They said: "Both boats were launched this morning to assist the Heddlu Dyfed Powys Police and Coastguard in a search for missing child believed to have fallen into the river."

They later confirmed that the child and their parent had been rescued from the river.

They are currently being treated by paramedics.

Fire service latest

A spokesman for the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “Swift Water Rescue Teams from Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service are currently in attendance of a water rescue near Heol Y Bont, Aberystwyth.

“The Fire Service received were called to the incident at 11:44am and the Coastguard are also in attendance.

“The incident is ongoing.”

Ambulance service statement

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called on Wednesday 22 July at approximately 11.45 am to reports of a person having fallen in a river in Aberystwyth.

“We responded with one rapid response vehicle, one emergency ambulance and we received the support of the Wales Air Ambulance.

“Two patients are currently being assessed by our crews.”

A spokesman said:

“Emergency Services were called to Aberystywth just before midday to reports a child and a parent had entered the River Rheidol.

Both have been located and are now out of the river.”

Child and parent rescued

Dyfed-Powys Police have told the BBC that a child and parent had been found in the River Rheidol in Aberystwyth and were now out of the water.

They are being checked over by paramedics.

The RNLI have confirmed that the child and a second casualty have been rescued from the water.
