An employee at a busy David Jones store in Melbourne has tested positive to coronavirus.

The department store in Chadstone Shopping Centre in the city's south-east temporarily closed around midday on Tuesday to undergo deep cleaning.

'A team member at our David Jones Chadstone store in Victoria has tested positive for COVID-19 and is recovering in isolation at home,' A David Jones spokesperson said.

'Our foremost priority remains the health and safety of our team members and customers and as a result, our Chadstone store will be closed while an extensive deep clean and contact tracing is completed in strict accordance with all health authority guidelines.

'Rigorous health and safety measures remain in place in all our stores to support the safety of our team and the community.'

Chadstone Shopping Centre manager Michael Whitehead said he hadn't received any information that customers or other retail workers were at risk. 

'We have received no advice which indicates there was any risk to our customers or retail team members who visited Chadstone,' Mr Whitehead said.

'We have also increased our cleaning roster since learning of the case, with additional focus on specific areas including handrails, toilets, door handles, sinks, change tables and parents’ rooms, as well as communal furniture throughout the centre.'

It comes after Victoria recorded 374 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday and three more deaths.

A baby and two employees also tested positive on Tuesday at the Ada Mary A'Beckett Children's Centre, in Port Melbourne.

The centre has been shut down while a deep clean is undertaken, and contact-tracing has begun.

There has also been another case confirmed at Manor Lakes College in Wyndham Vale. The school will be shut until further notice.  

Tuesday's reported spike in cases comes just a day before masks become compulsory in Victoria, with $200 fines for failing to wear them coming into force from 11.59pm on Wednesday night.

Students aged 12 or older who are attending school will be required to wear a mask from Thursday.

Meanwhile in Sydney, two shopping centres and a Big W store have closed after customers tested positive to the virus. 

Cabramatta Plaza in western Sydney, Vanity Nails in Carlingford Court in Sydney's north-west and Big W at Carnes Hill Marketplace in the city' south-west all closed on Monday to all undergo a deep clean following exposure to COVID-19.

The locations are among 40 venues and businesses around the state linked to coronavirus cases.
