Mazda introduced the CX-30 in the United States last year, and now the company has announced a few updates for 2021.

First up, the crossover has a slightly convoluted name as it’s now called the “CX-30 2.5 S.” That’s odd for a number of reasons as it’s not a trim and all CX-30s come equipped with the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 186 hp (139 kW / 189 PS) and 186 lb-ft (252 Nm) of torque.

Mazda didn’t explain the name change, but hopefully it’s to make room for a CX-30 2.5 Turbo sometime in the future. That seems possible as the 2021 Mazda3, which is closely related to the CX-30, now offers a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine that develops up to the 250 hp (186 kW / 253 PS) and 320 lb-ft (433 Nm) of torque.

Getting back to the CX-30, the entry-level model starts at $21,900 and now features Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. The crossover also comes equipped with LED lighting units, rain-sensing wipers and 16-inch alloy wheels. Other highlights include an 8.8-inch infotainment system, an eight-speaker sound system and a 7-inch digital display in the instrument cluster.

An assortment of driver assistance systems come standard including Mazda radar cruise control with stop and go, smart brake support and driver attention alert. The model also has high beam control and lane departure warning with lane-keep assist.

The CX-30 2.5 S with the Select Package starts at $23,900 and adds rear privacy glass as well as larger 18-inch alloy wheels. Inside, there’s a leather-wrapped steering wheel, leatherette seats and a dual-zone automatic climate control system. Other niceties include rear air vents, a rear armrest with cupholders, a passive entry system and a blind spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert.

Sitting one step above is the CX-30 2.5 S with the Preferred Package. It starts at $26,300 and adds heated front seats, a moonroof and an eight-way power driver’s with lumbar support and a memory function. The model also has a slightly revised exterior with a “black gloss finish” grille.

Lastly, there’s the $28,550 CX-30 2.5 S with the Premium Package. It has a head-up display, leather seats and GPS navigation. Other highlights include LED signature lighting, an adaptive front lighting system, a power liftgate and a 12-speaker Bose audio system. The model is also distinguished by a shark fin antenna, roof rails and paddle shifters.

Front-wheel drive comes standard, but all-wheel drive is optional on all trims / packages. It costs an additional $1,400 and has an off-road traction assist feature which promises to help drivers when “venturing on uneven terrain.”

The 2021 CX-30 will go on sale next month and the aforementioned pricing excludes a destination and handling fee of $1,100 ($1,145 in Alaska).
