Victorian public servants win pay rise

About 40,000 Victorian public servants have secured a pay rise worth at least 2 per cent and improvements to workplace conditions.

Treasurer Tim Pallas on Tuesday afternoon said an "in-principle" agreement had been reached with the Community and Public Sector Union for a new three-year deal for government workers employed in 40 departments and agencies.

Mr Pallas’ office said the new deal was in line with the government’s policy of a 2 per cent public sector wage rise.

News of the agreement comes just weeks after pay rises, worth tens of thousands of dollars in some cases, kicked in for 238 Victorian Public Service executives.

After a ruling of the independent Remuneration Tribunal, five senior bureaucrats received pay rises of more than $40,000, another 33 are more than $20,000 better off, while 200 others received an increase of less than $20,000 on July 1.

The Treasurer said the new agreement for rank-and-file government workers also includes 16 weeks parental leave for both primary and secondary carers and a mobility clause, giving the government "greater ability to redeploy staff to areas where surge capacity is required".

The CPSU, which went into the talks last year with a 3.5 per cent annual pay claim, has been contacted for comment.
