Small idols at a shadu clay workshop run by the Patil brothers in AiroliMUMBAI: Prominent Ganpati mandals across the city have fallen in line with the state order to forgo large idols for Ganeshotsav 2020. The 10-day festival is from August 22 to September 1.
From Khetwadi to Kalachowkie, Lalbaug to Anjirwadi, Tilak Nagar to Borivli, and even Navi Mumbai, plaster of paris idols that once towered at 20-35ft will be downsized to 3-4ft moortis carved from soluble clay.
Arrival and visarjan processions will make way for localised immersions in artificial tanks. Online darshan will be the new normal and cultural programmes will be eschewed. Social distancing and sanitisation will be observed.
The Khetwadicha Mahaganpati of Khetwadi had brought a 35ft Ganpati idol last year, which was reportedly the tallest in Mumbai. Spokesman Nilesh Shridhankar said, “But this year we will install a 3ft eco-friendly idol and make sure we follow the norms set. A temperature gun and hand sanitiser will be kept in the pandal. There will be no aagman or visarjan yatra."
In Anjirwadi, Mazgaon, NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal’s palace setting and stately idol will make way for a 3ft clay idol in the local Ganesh temple, said spokesman Satyen Kesarkar.
With a 3ft moorti, the Sahyadri Mandal of Tilak Nagar, Chembur, will bring shift its venue to Sahyadri Lawns, Vrindavan Society, instead of its usual site at Tilak Nagar grounds, said vice president Jaya Shetty.
