This morning's press conferences, recapped

Thank you for reading our live coverage of the coronavirus pandemic in Australia. If you're just joining us, you missed a rather busy morning of press conferences and announcements. Here is a summary.

The JobKeeper and JobSeeker payments will be continue at reduced rates from the end of September until March 28, Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Treasurer Josh Frydenberg have announced

  • JobKeeper will be reduced from $1500 a fortnight to $1200 for full-time workers and $750 for part-time workers (20 hours of work a week or less). In December this will drop to $1000 for full-time workers and $650 for part-time workers. There will be a new eligibility test introduced in October, but it will still be based on business turnover.
  • JobSeeker will be reduced from $1100 to around $800 a fortnight and the coronavirus supplement will be reduced from $550 to $250 for the last quarter.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews' state recorded 374 new cases today, and sadly reported three deaths. The deaths were in women in their 80s, 90s and 100s, two of whom lived in nursing homes.

  • Mr Andrews said it was "too early" to discuss if further lockdown restrictions were needed, but said some Melburnians still were not doing the right thing.
  • Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said the state would be seeing thousands more cases without a lockdown.
  • Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said a plan to distribute masks to the vulnerable would be announced shortly.

NSW Health has announced it has recorded 13 new cases overnight. One case was in hotel quarantine, ten were linked to Wetherill Park's Thai Rock restaurant cluster, which is now at 26, and two were linked to the Crossroads Hotel cluster, which is now at 50.

And Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has said her state is considering extending its postcode ban to other areas of NSW unless the state stops its spread. She has also written to NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian to ask for the border to be shifted south of the Tweed River due to the congestion caused by the border checkpoint.
