BENGALURU:
Karnataka has around 2,582 people per million in quarantine at present as opposed to around 1,400 in the first week of July. As of Sunday morning,1.5 lakh people were quarantined across the state.
Bengaluru, which accounts for 29,621 of 59,652 cases in the state, has 83,576 people in
isolation at the rate of 8,357 per million. The number stood at 4,700 in the first week of July.
According to
state war room data, all districts but one have over 500 people in quarantine, with
Kalaburagi, Dharwad and Ballari reporting more than 6,000. Other districts have less than 5,000 people. Separate data from the war room show only 21% of those in quarantine have sent selfies to report their status, which left the authorities making more home visits (89,340 houses) to ensure isolation norms are not flouted. The request for selfies was among the many measures taken by the state to tackle the spread.
The number of people in quarantine is based on data from Seva Sindhu portal, and the number of selfies sent is calculated on the basis of photographs received. Though officials have been reiterating that prevention is the best way to beat Covid, they say people are not cooperating.
Another set of data accessed from the government reveals patients who are recovering spend about 12.7 days in hospital on average, while those dying spend about 3.7 days. These figures stood at 12 and six days, respectively, in the second week of June.
This indicates that patients who are dying are spending very little time in hospital, making it difficult for doctors. Last week, Dr S Sacchidanand, vicechancellor, RGUHS and member,
Covid-19 death audit committee, told TOI that almost 50% of the deaths audited showed the patient had spent a day or less than 24 hours in hospital.
Experts have been insisting on early hospitalisation of people with symptoms to check the fatality rate, which as of July 18 was 2%, an increase from 1.6% as on July 4.
