Representative imageGUWAHATI: The Covid-19 situation in Assam is fast turning critical in terms of mortality and community transmission after the death toll climbed to 64 with six more deaths reported on Tuesday while centre informed the state government that there is possibility of Guwahati registering 22,000 Covid-19 positive cases by August 15.
“We have assumed that this spike in the state will continue till August 31 or September 15. After that it will come down,” Assam health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said at a meeting with health department officials at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) here on Tuesday.
Earlier the centre had estimated that the total positive cases in Assam is likely to reach 65,000 by next month. “The central government has informed us that we are likely to have 65,000 cases in the state of which 22,000 alone in Guwahati by August 15. Today our total cases is over 25,000 and if this total reaches the figure of 65,000 as estimated by central government, then we are likely to have 1000 to 1200 cases daily,” Sarma said.
He added, “In case of Guwahati, centre has informed that the total cases would reach 22,000, which means we will have 700 to 900 cases on a daily basis.”
Guwahati currently is reporting the highest number of cases in the state. The city has registered 11,083 positive cases while the total number in the state has reached is 25,092 till Tuesday. On the other hand 17.095 patients have already recovered following which the rate of recovery now stands at 71%.
Sarma said in a tweet that six men and women of ages 63, 51, 74, 65, 67, and 44 years “succumbed to #COVID19.”
He said, “The 21-days lockdown in Guwahati brought down the daily number of cases from 700 to 450. In these two days of the unlocking since Monday, many more would have contacted the virus and we will start getting this stream of positive cases from July 27 onwards when the daily cases in the city will again raise to about 750 or even more.”
