Maharashtra coaching classes want to open in green, orange zones, economic sops
Image used for representational purpose only MUMBAI: After nearly four months of being shut down, coaching classes across the state have demanded that they be allowed to restart operations in green and orange zones. The tutorial owners in Maharashtra have also requested for tax relief and clarity on the syllabus and examination structure for this year.
The Professional Teachers Association (PTA), Maharashtra Class Owners’ Association (MCOA), Association Of Coaching Institute Nagpur (ACI) Coaching Classes Proprietor's Association Maharashtra State (CCPA) and Association of Coaching Class Owners & Mentors (ACCOM) that claim representation of over 98,000 class owners in the state have said enrollments this year are down to 30% and most of them are struggling to stay afloat.
Most coaching classes in the state have been providing online learning modules to the students. "We are ensuring that the students aren't impacted and hence most of us have completed about 50-60% of the syllabus for the academic year. However, the government is yet to announce if it is doing to reduce the syllabus and how exams must be conducted. For college students, there is still no clarity on the pending exams as well," said Prajesh Trotsky, secretary of the association.
The classes are seeking monetary relief as well. "We request that no GST should be charged for the first half of the financial year. Since we provide an educational service, the GST must also be lower. If the government lowers the GST, we can lower the fees and pass the benefit to the students. We also want an economic package of Rs 25,000 per coaching class owner for each month of the lockdown," said Karnavat.
