HYDERABAD: A cell phone theft case accused set himself ablaze in front of Chandrayangutta police station on Monday night. Cops quickly doused the flames and rushed him to Osmania General Hospital (OGH) for treatment.
Mohammed Shabbir, 25, was brought to the police station after he was caught stealing a phone from a victim on Monday evening. "We found another phone from his possession which he stole three days ago from Kummariwadi area. Shabbir is a repeat offender, previously he was convicted in similar offences," said Chandrayangutta police inspector, Rudra Bhaskar.
According to police, after he created nuisance and theft case was registered in the police station, cops allegedly asked him to come back on Tuesday and let him off.
"He came back drenched in petrol and threatened to lit himself if we didn't return the stolen phone to him. Before we could talk him out, he set himself ablaze," added the officer.
The detective inspector, Prasad Varma, along with other officers rushed to douse the fire
"He had earlier also hurt himself and creates nuisance whenever he gets caught. Shabbir was rushed to OGH with 30 per cent burn injuries on his hand, chest and back. Officer Varma, who doused the fire also sustained injuries on his hand," said the inspector.
