BOSTON --- The Blue Jays begin what could be a season-long road trip when they visit the Red Sox for a pair of exhibition games Tuesday and Wednesday.
Canada’s federal government will not allow Toronto to play its 2020 home games at Rogers Centre. The weekend ruling declined to give the 29 other Major League Baseball clubs an exception to the nation’s current border closure to non-essential travel.
"It’ll be interesting to see where they end up and where we end up playing them," Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke said. "I know there are some options for them. But I get it."
Canada has done an effective job nationally of clamping down on its coronavirus cases. The province of Ontario reported just 164 new positive tests Sunday, and federal officials reported just four deaths. The United States, by comparison, has set a new single-day record for positive tests nine times in the month of July alone.
"I don’t know if we opened things up too quick in this country and that’s why we had the spikes in areas," Roenicke said. "I know back in California where I live we probably opened it up too fast, and then all of a sudden we have these issues going on and they’ve shut it down again. Florida may be the same case. It’s hard to say.
"I think you can do the right things and still have a spike. It’s hard to say why these things happen, but I get it. I get Canada not wanting to have that happen to them. They’ve got a real good thing going right now. They’ve been able to really minimize the virus."
Blue Jays officials are reportedly inquiring about sharing an MLB ballpark with another franchise. Toronto opens with seven straight road games – two against Boston, five in the regular season at Tampa Bay and Washington – before it’s scheduled to host the Nationals on July 29.
