'No one's going to stop me': Defiant Melbourne resident sparks outrage for making a 38km trip to do his 'Greek shopping' while the city is under COVID-19 lockdown

  • Man drove 38km from Frankston to Oakleigh so he could do his 'Greek shopping'
  • He told a reporter he did not think he had to stay in Frankston to go shopping
  • 'No one is going to stop me for coming up here, there's no one up here,' he said
  • It comes after Jodi Grollo went viral for complaining about the strict lockdown
  • She said she was sick of walking the same routes and had covered all of Brighton
  • Victoria recorded 363 coronavirus cases on Sunday and another three deaths

A man has been slammed for travelling 38km across Melbourne so he can do his 'Greek shopping'.

The shopper drove 30 minutes from Frankston to Oakleigh, in Melbourne's south-east, on Sunday to go to his favourite Greek supermarket.

The city has had stage three lockdown restrictions in place since July 8, meaning people are only allowed to leave their homes for food, medicine, exercise, study and work.

A video of the man being interviewed after doing his grocery shopping sparked outrage after being posted to Reddit

When the shopper told a 9 News reporter he was from Frankston, she stumbled in shock and asked why he drove all the way to Oakleigh, almost 40km to the north.

'Aren't you supposed to be staying in Frankston?' the reporter asked.

'No, why would I?' he replied.

The reporter told him about the stage three coronavirus restrictions, but the man said that was not going to stop him.

'No one is going to stop me for coming up here, there's no one up here,' the man said.

'I always come up here to do my shopping, I always do the Greek shopping because I'm Greek.'

The reporter asked: 'Are you joking?'

'No I'm serious,' the man said.

The reporter claimed he could be fined for travelling the 38km to Oakleigh just to go shopping and asked if he was worried or concerned.

'Not really... I wear a mask,' he said.

People living in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire are under stay at home restrictions but are allowed to leave their homes to go shopping for food or essential items.

But commenters on the Reddit post slammed the man for travelling so far during the city's coronavirus second wave.

'I love that by the end of it, even the reporter is in awe,' one Reddit user wrote.

'There are those who blame the premier for our infection numbers but it's people making bad choices that are responsible for making that happen,' another commented.

Others compared the man to Jodi Grollo, who went viral after saying she was sick of walking in her home suburb after Melburnians were urged to exercise locally.

'Well, you get sick of walking the same streets. You know, I've done all of Brighton,' she told Nine News this week while walking the city's Tan track.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews made a barbed remark to the frustrated woman, saying being bored was better than being sick.

'I've got a very clear message to every single Victorian, particularly some of those featured on social media: whether you are in Broadmeadows or Brighton, stay at home means stay at home,' he said on Saturday.

'And if walking your local streets is boring, well, being bored is much better than being in intensive care. That's my clear message.'

It comes as Victoria recorded 363 new coronavirus cases on Sunday and another three deaths, two men and a woman all in their 90s, bringing the state toll to 38 and the national figure to 122.
