In Japan, prefectural governors decided to ask the central government to think about excluding more areas from a travel campaign if necessary for restricting the spread of corona virus. The governors said that they hope that the ¥1.35 trillion subsidy initiative aimed towards boosting domestic tourism and travel will help revitalize their battered economies.
The central government said that it will launch the Go To Travel campaign on Wednesday as planned, but it is leaving out travel to and from Tokyo following a recent increase in cases in the Japanese capital.
“We are facing a critical phase where we have to deal with the movement (of people) in wider areas and prevent the spread of the virus at the same time,” said Tokushima Gov. Kamon Iizumi, president of the National Governors’ Association, referring to the increase in countrywide infections.
Tokyo is the hardest-hit area with its increase in new cases. The governors urged the central government to run the campaign over the long term, since some areas in the Kyushu region are being able to welcome tourists in the wake of devastating floods caused by torrential rains. They also asked the government regarding revealing information about infections at U.S. bases in Japan since an increasing number of new cases have been reported by the U.S military. In Okinawa, which hosts the majority of U.S. military facilities in Japan, 143 military personnel have tested positive, according to the prefectural government.
The segregation of Tokyo from the tourism campaign resulted in a series of cancellations of travel bookings.
