Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has written to her New South Wales counterpart requesting the interstate border be moved further south to the Tweed River.

It comes as extra defence force personnel are brought in to help reinforce police officers patrolling the various Queensland interstate border crossings with NSW and the Northern Territory.

Ms Palaszczuk drafted her letter to NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian over the weekend, as footage emerged of people on foot jumping over border barricades.

"I’ve got a letter that we’ve been working on over the weekend and I’ll be sending that on Monday, the Queensland leader said.

"We have previously requested at an operational level [that the border] could be moved to the Tweed River, that is purely a matter now for the NSW premier.

"I’m not going to comment on it any further until I have been able to send that letter and have a discussion with her.

"We have got very strict measures in place about Victoria and the hotspots in NSW and we continue to monitor that on a daily basis.

"As you will see, there are extra ADF members coming in to help monitor the borders as well and I want to stress that everyone must be doing the right thing.

"We saw some footage over the weekend of people jumping those [border] barricades – it’s not on. This is a safety issue for Queensland and I just stress to everyone to please do the right thing."

There were only two active COVID-19 cases remaining in the Sunshine State on Sunday and there were no new cases. Queensland has had no cases of community transmission since early May.
